Every decision is implicitly a values statement. Choosing work over family says something. Choosing comfort over growth says something. Choosing security over adventure says something. The question is whether these trade-offs are deliberate or default.
Most people can list "values" that sound good: honesty, family, integrity, growth. But when asked to RANK them — which matters MORE when they conflict — they struggle. Because ranking values requires confronting trade-offs, and trade-offs reveal what you actually believe vs what you think you should believe.
Inherited values: absorbed from family, culture, religion, and social environment. You didn't choose them — they were installed. They may serve you well, or they may be someone else's priorities operating inside your decision-making. The mark of an inherited value: you feel guilty violating it but can't articulate why it's important to YOU (as opposed to important to your parents/culture/peers).
Chosen values: arrived at through reflection, experience, and deliberate selection. You can articulate why they matter. They guide decisions even when no one is watching. They produce alignment — the feeling that your actions match your beliefs.
The clarification process: (1) List your top 10 values. (2) Force-rank them. This is painful — it means deciding that when honesty and kindness conflict, which wins? (3) Test against your actual behavior: does your calendar and bank statement reflect your stated values? If you say "family" is #1 but work gets 70 hours and family gets 10, your revealed values differ from your stated values. (4) Resolve the gap: either change your behavior to match your values or honestly update your stated values to match your behavior.
Most people have inherited values they never chose and can't rank. Your calendar and bank statement reveal your actual values better than any list. The clarification process: list, force-rank, test against behavior, resolve the gap. When stated values and revealed values diverge, one of them needs to change.
