In 2023, an estimated 90% of internet content was predicted to be AI-generated within a few years. By 2025, the prediction is becoming reality. Large language models (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini), image generators (Midjourney, DALL-E, Stable Diffusion), and video generators are producing content at a scale that makes human-only content the minority.
This isn't inherently bad — AI tools can democratize content creation, assist with education, and augment human capability. But the information ecosystem was never designed for this volume. Search engines, social media algorithms, and our own cognitive filters evolved for a world where content creation required effort, which served as a natural quality filter. That filter is gone.
The fundamental challenge: AI can produce confident, articulate, well-structured content that is completely wrong. Unlike human writers who draw on lived experience and are constrained by what they actually know, AI models generate statistically plausible text regardless of factual accuracy. The form (polished, professional, detailed) no longer correlates with the quality of the underlying thinking.
AI detection tools exist, but they're fighting a losing battle. Every improvement in detection is quickly countered by improvements in generation. As of 2025, no detector reliably distinguishes AI-generated text from human-written text, especially when AI output is lightly edited by a human.
More importantly, focusing on detection misses the point. The real question isn't "was this made by AI?" but "is this accurate, well-reasoned, and trustworthy?" A human can write garbage. An AI can help produce excellent analysis. The provenance of content matters less than its quality — but our heuristics for judging quality (authorial credibility, institutional backing, production value) are all being disrupted.
What you CAN look for: claims without sources, excessive confidence about uncertain topics, generic examples that don't feel lived-in, and suspiciously even-handed "on the one hand, on the other hand" structures that avoid taking actual positions.
AI-generated content creates several new epistemic challenges:
Astroturfing at scale: Previously, manufacturing fake grassroots movements required hiring real people. Now, a single operator can generate thousands of unique, convincing social media posts, reviews, and comments. This makes it nearly impossible to distinguish genuine public opinion from manufactured consensus.
Expertise dilution: When anyone can generate expert-sounding content on any topic, the signal-to-noise ratio for genuine expertise collapses. A real oncologist's medical advice competes with AI-generated health content that sounds equally authoritative.
Circular training: AI models are increasingly trained on AI-generated content ("model collapse"). Each generation amplifies the biases and errors of the previous one, creating a feedback loop of degrading quality that's invisible to casual consumers.
The trust crisis deepens: In a world of abundant synthetic content, skepticism becomes the default. But universal skepticism is as dangerous as universal credulity — it makes you vulnerable to "nothing is true, everything is permitted" nihilism that authoritarians exploit.

The most dangerous AI content isn't the obviously fake stuff — it's the 95% accurate content with subtle, hard-to-detect errors woven in. This is where AI-assisted misinformation excels.
Adaptation strategies for an AI-flooded information ecosystem:
1. Privilege primary sources over summaries. AI can summarize — but the original data, research paper, court filing, or financial statement is harder to fabricate than a summary of it.
2. Check for specificity. AI tends toward generality. Real expertise involves specific details, unusual examples, and counterintuitive observations that generic models don't produce.
3. Look for skin in the game. Who stands behind this content with their name and reputation? Anonymous, authorless content is now presumptively synthetic until proven otherwise.
4. Maintain a trust network. Cultivate relationships with reliable sources, experts, and institutions whose track record you can verify. In a world of infinite content, trusted curators become more valuable than content itself.
5. Accept uncertainty. The ability to say "I don't know if this is real" is now a fundamental epistemic skill. The pressure to have an opinion on everything — amplified by social media — becomes more dangerous as the content base becomes less trustworthy.
AI-generated content is flooding the information ecosystem, and detection tools are losing the arms race. Focus less on "was this made by AI?" and more on "is this accurate and well-sourced?" Privilege primary sources, check for specificity, look for accountability, and maintain trusted networks of verified experts.
