The information ecosystem is contaminated by three distinct categories of bad information, each requiring different defenses:
Misinformation: False information shared without intent to harm. Your uncle sharing an inaccurate health claim he genuinely believes. A journalist getting a fact wrong. A misremembered statistic in conversation. The solution is correction and education.
Disinformation: Deliberately false information created and spread to deceive. State-sponsored propaganda, corporate cover-ups, fabricated news stories. The creator knows it's false. The solution is exposure and accountability.
Malinformation: True information shared with intent to harm. Doxxing (publishing someone's private address). Leaked private photos. Selectively releasing genuine documents out of context to damage a target. The information is real — the use is weaponized. The solution is context and ethical norms.
Most public discourse conflates all three under "fake news," which is convenient for bad actors. Someone sharing misinformation (honest mistake) gets lumped with state-sponsored disinformation (deliberate attack). This conflation makes it harder to respond appropriately to each type.
Context
The term "fake news" was originally used to describe fabricated news sites (disinformation). It was rapidly co-opted as a dismissal of any unfavorable reporting ("that's fake news"). Once the term lost specificity, it lost utility. Using the specific terms — misinformation, disinformation, malinformation — preserves the ability to respond appropriately to each category.
Information warfare is the deliberate use of information to confuse, divide, and destabilize target populations. It's not new — propaganda has existed as long as governments. What's new is the scale, speed, and precision of digital information warfare.
The Russian Internet Research Agency (IRA), documented extensively in the Mueller investigation and by the Stanford Internet Observatory, operated thousands of fake social media accounts posing as American citizens. These accounts didn't promote a single viewpoint — they amplified ALL sides of divisive issues simultaneously. Pro-gun AND anti-gun. Pro-immigration AND anti-immigration. The goal wasn't to convince — it was to inflame.
The strategy: exploit existing societal divisions, amplify extreme positions on all sides, erode trust in shared reality and institutions, and create a population so confused and polarized that collective action becomes impossible. You don't need to win the argument if you can destroy the ability to have coherent arguments.
China's information operations focus differently: promoting positive narratives about China, suppressing critical coverage, and using economic leverage over Western companies to induce self-censorship (the NBA/Hong Kong incident, Hollywood modifying films for Chinese market access).
Domestic actors use the same playbook at smaller scale: political operatives create networks of seemingly independent social media accounts that amplify coordinated messages, think tanks produce research supporting funder interests while appearing academic, and PACs run ad campaigns through layers of shell organizations to obscure the actual source.
Astroturfing: manufacturing the appearance of grassroots public support. The term comes from "AstroTurf" — fake grass that looks real from a distance. Digital astroturfing uses bot networks, paid commenters, and coordinated inauthentic behavior to create the illusion that many independent people hold the same opinion.
Bot networks: automated social media accounts that amplify specific messages. Modern bots are sophisticated — they have profile photos (often AI-generated), post histories, and follower networks that make them appear human. They operate in coordinated swarms, liking, sharing, and commenting to boost specific content into trending topics.
The amplification cascade: a message starts with a coordinated bot network → bots push it to trending → real users see it trending and share it (bandwagon effect) → news outlets cover it because it's trending → it becomes a "real" story. The entire pipeline from fabrication to mainstream coverage can take hours.
Signs of coordinated inauthentic behavior: sudden spikes in engagement on previously obscure content, accounts with little history suddenly becoming very active on a specific topic, identical or near-identical phrasing across many accounts, and engagement patterns that don't match normal human behavior (posting 24/7, replying within seconds).
Warning
By some estimates, 5-15% of social media accounts are bots. During major political events, the proportion can be much higher. A "viral" post with 50,000 retweets may have been amplified primarily by automated accounts. The social proof you see (likes, shares, comments) is partially manufactured. This doesn't mean everything is fake — it means the signal-to-noise ratio is worse than it appears.
Slow down: Information warfare relies on emotional reactions bypassing critical evaluation. The "share" impulse activated by outrage, fear, or tribal satisfaction is the transmission mechanism. Adding a 30-second pause before sharing any emotionally triggering content breaks the chain.
Check the source: Who published this? When? Does the outlet exist outside this single story? Is the "journalist" a real person with a verifiable history? Fabricated news sites often have professional-looking designs but no editorial staff, physical address, or publication history.
Reverse image search: Disinformation often repurposes images from different times and places. A photo of a "current" event may be years old and from a different country. Google Reverse Image Search and TinEye can verify image origins in seconds.
Look for the original source: Most shared content is second or third-hand. Trace the claim back to its origin. Often the original source is: a satire site taken out of context, a misquoted study, a fabricated screenshot, or a real event distorted through layers of resharing.
Diversify your information diet: If all your information comes from one platform, one political orientation, or one media ecosystem, you're maximally vulnerable to information warfare targeting that ecosystem. Cross-reference across sources with different structural incentives.
Accept uncertainty: Information warfare succeeds when people feel they must have an immediate opinion on everything. "I don't know yet" and "I need more information" are legitimate, powerful positions. The pressure to have an instant take on every event is itself a manipulation vector.

Information warfare uses misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation to confuse, divide, and destabilize. State actors and domestic operatives use bot networks and astroturfing to manufacture consensus and amplify division. Defense: slow down before sharing, verify sources and images, trace claims to their origin, diversify your information diet, and accept that "I don't know yet" is a legitimate position.
